High school FFA students participate in both individual and team fashion in rural & urban soils and forestry judging. Land and soils judging encompasses the students ability to determine percent of slope, land use, and soils properties such as texture and permeability. Urban contestants rate the soil and site limitations for building purposes while rural contestants come up with the recommended conservation practices for land improvement. The Forestry contest is comprised of tree identification, diameter and log measurements, conversion to board feet, forestry equipment identification, a forestry knowledge test, and compass orienteering. |

The Forestry Camp, run by the Ohio Forestry Association since 1950, is held at Camp Muskingum in Carroll County. This is an academic resident camp where students participate in classes, mostly in the outdoors, covering tree identification and cultivation, ecology, and forest products. Students will literally see the forest and the trees as they learn first hand how to appreciate Ohio's forest and related natural resources. Students also have plenty of recreation time as well. The Delaware SWCD offers a scholarship to this camp to a Delaware County high school student who is interested in natural resources, conservation, and the outdoors, and wants to attend the Forestry Camp.
